WAF Welcomes Plumbers License Announcement

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) welcomes the announcement by the Fijian Government on the licensing of plumbers by the Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Civil Service, Communications, Housing, and Community Development, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the 2022-2023 National Budget in Parliament.

In welcoming the announcement, WAF CEO, Dr Amit Chanan, said that plumbers provide an essential service in Fiji’s society, and the quality of their work underpins the safety of our homes and commercial buildings.

“We at WAF are grateful to this provision and this is something that we have been working on for some time as it is very critical to have qualified and certified licensed plumbers in Fiji – as a developing country this is very imperative,” Dr Chanan explained.

The task of providing the necessary training facilities and examinations for Fijians who want to apply and get certified in this trade will be facilitated by the Fiji National University (FNU).

“Having a license ensures that a plumber in Fiji has been tested for his or her knowledge and skill to carry out their work. It is really important that those issuing the licenses certify that a plumber has reached a minimum level of training and experience to perform plumbing work, are credible and have expertise in the field themselves and we are delighted to partner with the FNU for this,” said Dr Chanan.

FNU Chancellor and Chair of Council, Ms Tessa Price acknowledged the efficiency and integration of previously issued licenses into one.

“As a dual-sector institution, FNU provides technical and vocation education and training (TVET) for trade skills such as plumbing,” Ms Price said.

“The licensing requirement reinforces the credibility, relevance and specialised skills set of plumbers who have undertaken studies at FNU. In addition, NTPC’s National Trade Testing Scheme has continuously provided trade testing and skills certification for trades such as plumbing.”

“As the national institution, FNU will also ensure it continues to provide the necessary qualifications and skills training to address national needs.”

The plumbers’ license will integrate and replace the waterworks fitters’ license and drain layers license previously issued by Water & Sewerage Department and the Municipal Councils respectively in the past.

In doing so, this will ensure certified Fijian tradesmen comply with the building and construction industry standards and requirements in Fiji.
