Public Advisory: Urgent Repair Works to Collapsed Wastewater Trunk Main

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) will carry out urgent repairs from today (29/10/21) into the weekend on a collapsed wastewater trunk main, which resulted in a sinkhole at 4 Miles Bridge in front of Rewa Dairy.

The sinkhole occurred on WAF’s Western Wastewater Trunk Main which transports raw wastewater from Suva City and the surrounding areas to Kinoya Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The collapsed pipeline is a DN 900 Concrete Pipe that spans across the highway from the upstream manhole on the Cunningham Road exit to the downstream manhole beside the 4 Miles Road Bridge.

“We are working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority to repair the collapsed wastewater trunk main as soon as possible,” said WAF Acting Chief Operating Officer, Miteshwar Chand.

WAF is working very closely with stakeholders, especially the FRA, and will carry out the necessary repairs and hand over the site to the FRA contractors for permanent road reinstatement works before opening to road users.

WAF will be prioritising these repair works with urgency, keeping in mind the health and safety of its staff and the general public are not compromised given the nature of works involved with the repairs.

The Authority also requests that the travelling public be mindful of the workers who will be working in the area.

As a precautionary measure, Kings Road has been fully closed between Nabua Roundabout and Centrepoint traffic lights.

In the interim, traffic will be diverted down through Ratu Dovi Road for commuters travelling to Suva.

For commuters travelling towards Nausori, they will need to go through Jerusalem Road or up Mead Road and down Khalsa.

Traffic management is in place for those that require to go close to the cavity area only on official business and residences off Kings Road.

Travellers along this area are advised to take this notice into account when finalising travel plans.
