MOALA SETTLEMENT UPDATE

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) would like to provide an update on the water situation at Moala Settlement, located at Reba Circle in Nadera, after misleading claims regarding pipes having to be laid a long distance from the mains to their settlement, despite being next to a WAF water treatment plant.

WAF confirmed that the settlement, consisting of 20 households and 200 residents, does have 15 connected water meters but these are installed in a chamber about 150 metres away from the settlement – this was due to a land dispute issue that is beyond our control.

With the meters being connected quite a distance away, the water pipes supplying water from the meter to the individual homes are prone to be damaged easily causing the residents to be affected by water leakages.

In 2018, WAF teams had visited the settlement when this issue was initially raised by a resident of the settlement, however, due to a land dispute issue with the landowners, we were not granted approval to relocate the meters.

WAF’s priority is to try and solve the issue that is affecting our customers, and as our efforts were not being met with a successful outcome, we requested the resident who had raised that issue with us, to discuss the matter with the landowner, as our efforts to do the same was proving unsuccessful.

The resident was also requested to get a letter from Rishikul Primary School in Nadera, granting approval for work to begin since the connections will also be crossing over the school boundary.

Lastly, the resident was also advised to obtain a written request, signed by all the members of the community, as confirmation that the meters need to be relocated for continued use by customers.

WAF once again urges members of the public to always be cautious of any information from non-official sources, as they could be false and misleading, and to always verify information through official sources such as WAF’s social media, or that of the Fijian Government and relevant Ministries.
