Tropical Cyclone Harold has caused significant damage to Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) systems which teams are working around the clock to fix.
“We anticipated the bad weather and already had in place mitigatory strategies to minimise damage caused by winds and flooding. We are working on areas that sustained damage to restore water supply to affected Fijians,” said WAF CEO, Mr Barry Omundson.
“We have prioritised deployment of teams to the areas that require attention most urgently and will be repairing and restoring services as soon as we can, bearing in mind the safety of our teams.”
Water carting trucks are being deployed as and when needed to ensure that Fijians continue to have a supply of clean and safe drinking water during any disruptions said Mr Omundson.
Power fluctuations also caused significant disruptions to how WAF was able to engage backup generators services.
Affected areas:
CENTRAL/EASTERN & MARITIME DIVISION
- Deuba, Nayagi, Navua, Naboro, Korovou/QVS, Suva – Nausori Area.
WESTERN DIVISION
- Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Sigatoka.
WAF calls on all Fijians to build resilience and cater for times of essential service disruptions by storing water for 2 to 3 days.
