Water Quality

We provide access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 820,000 Fijians across Fiji. Knowing that so many Fijians, comprising thousands of families and businesses around Fiji, rely on us for their essential daily need for water, we take the quality of our production very seriously.

National Water Quality Laboratory

Our National Water Quality Laboratory oversees that drinking water quality is maintained to meet the requirements of the WHO guidelines or the Fiji National Drinking Water Quality Standards. Our laboratory is also responsible for all waste water plants discharging effluents and ensuring that WAF maintains the regulations of the Environmental Management Act 2005.

The Laboratory collects samples, carries out analysis, comments on the results and reports the results to management and production personnel, and prescribes corrective action if necessary.

Environment Unit

The Environment Unit is responsible for;

  • Controlling Environment Management System (EMS) functions within the Water Authority of Fiji
  • Ensuring WAF complies with the Environment Management Act 2005 (an implementation plan for regulations for solid and liquid waste discharge).
  • Providing technical assistance and creating awareness internally regarding the Environment Management Act 2005, in collaboration with the Department of Environment.

Tips

During and after floods

  • Boil tap water first before drinking.
  • Ensure that it is stored in tight sealed containers after cooling.
  • You can also save rainwater for drinking and cooking purposes but make sure you boil it too before drinking.
  • Always ensure that hot and boiling water is kept away from children.

During and after burst water mains

  • Let tap water run for 3 to 5 minutes before drinking. This allows any mud or dust particles that may have entered the water and remained to clear out.
  • Also, let tap water run for 3 to 5 minutes if the water is milky and color is not clear. This happens when there are too many air bubbles in the water system.
Use of fire hydrants

  • Fire hydrants are not allowed to be used at any time.
  • Anyone found doing so will be prosecuted and fined for a minimum of a thousand dollars.
