WAF Provides Operational Update on Sakoca Water Supply

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is providing an operational update to residents of Sakoca, off Khalsa Road, following recent public discussion regarding intermittent water supply experienced in some elevated areas.

Over the past several weeks, WAF teams have been working to stabilise the Tamavua water system after heavy rainfall affected raw water quality at the Savura intake, temporarily reducing treatment output and reservoir levels. While supply conditions have improved in many areas, elevated sections of the network remain more sensitive to pressure fluctuations during peak demand or adverse weather.

WAF acknowledges the challenges faced by affected households and remains committed to maintaining essential water support while system performance continues to improve.

Targeted Water Carting Support

Water carting operations remain in place where network pressure is insufficient. Field teams have identified several logistical constraints within parts of the informal settlement that affect direct truck access, including low-hanging power lines, narrow streets, and homes located beyond roadside reach.

To support consistent service delivery, residents are encouraged to place containers at accessible roadside locations during scheduled daytime runs so crews can service the widest possible area efficiently.

Safeguarding Community Water Resources

WAF is aware of reports of damage to communal water tanks within the settlement. These shared facilities play an important role during supply disruptions, and their protection helps ensure fair access for all residents.

Engagement with Residents

WAF will continue working closely with community leaders to strengthen communication and improve awareness of operational constraints, water conservation, and shared responsibilities in managing local infrastructure.

Fairness in Service Delivery

Concerns raised regarding the distribution of water carting services are being reviewed through WAF’s internal processes. The Authority remains committed to transparent and equitable service delivery aligned with operational priorities and community needs.

Building Long-Term Resilience

WAF CEO, Seru Soderberg, said the Authority’s focus over the past few weeks has been on stabilising supply while advancing long-term improvements to strengthen resilience in growing urban areas.

“Recovery of reservoir levels and system balance takes time, particularly for elevated communities. Our teams are working around the clock to improve reliability while progressing infrastructure upgrades that will support future demand.”

He added that the Viria Water Treatment Plant is now operating at full design capacity, and the Sawani to Colo-i-Suva pipeline, currently under construction, will progressively improve supply to higher-elevation areas once commissioned.

How much is the Lodgment fee?

  • House under construction / Vacant land / Commercial or Industrial
    • $101.00.
  • Completely built house. – [Please provide a letter from the lands department and/ or completion certificate ]
    • $21.95. [Please provide a letter from the lands department. completion certificate or Stamped Statutory declaration on the completion of the house]

Processing Time

  • Inspection to Approval – 15 Working days from the inspection date.
  • Installation – 30 Working days from payment of New Connection cost, on a first-come, first-serve basis. [Stakeholder processing may cause delays]. *Note: Approval of installation is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

How much does the new connection cost?

  • Type A – $285 [“T” from existing connection] Type B $345 [direct connection from WAF main line]
  • New connection costs for Commercial and Industrial customers will be estimated according to requirements and a cost will be provided.
  • Road Crossing/ Service Enlargement is payable if required for additional meters requested. This will be communicated when the approval of internal and external stakeholders are obtained. WAF on behalf of FRA will refund any unused monies to the customer where applicable.
