The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Fiji Police Force (FPF) at the Fiji Police Force Headquarters today (09/11).
The MOA allows the Fiji Police Force to build and operate a communications tower within the Suva Water Supply reserve catchment area in the Nakobalevu ranges.
WAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Barry Omundson said that WAF was very happy to work with the Fiji Police Force as this allows WAF to use the tower structure for its communications purposes such as the use of Radio Telephony communications and its SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system.
“This agreement suits us as we also benefit from it as well, at the end of the day we are both serving the communities. We are very happy and fortunate to be working with the Fiji Police Force. We are excited about the opportunities that this will provide us to our SCADA system, which will certainly benefit us and every Fijian,” Mr. Omundson explained.
Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu thanked the WAF CEO for allowing the Fiji Police Force to build and operate a communications tower in the Nakobalevu ranges.
“This is history for us as we do not have a site of our own – given the geographical location and layout of where our Police Stations and Posts are around Fiji, we still rely on the existing infrastructure that is already in place. I extend my deep appreciation on your decision to let us into the catchment area and for us to have our own communications tower – this will concur well into the full operations of the Fiji Police Force,” ACP Tudravu said.
ACP Tudravu said that the Fiji Police Force will assist WAF with surveillance of its water catchment assets and also use of communications as and when required and that the communications tower will host a wide area network link for Police CCTV cameras for traffic monitoring and surveillance within the Lami and Suva to Nausori corridor.
WAF services cover 18,274 square kilometers of the 332 islands in the Fiji archipelago, of which 110 are inhabited.
Over 829,150 Fijians, comprising of thousands of families and businesses around Fiji, rely on WAF for their essential daily need for water.
Meanwhile, WAF also asks that Fijians practise water conservation and to store at least two days worth of water in case of emergencies.
