WAF CONDUCTS DAILY VALVE OPERATIONS TO ASSIST WITH RARALEVU RESERVOIR LEVELS

The Water Authority of Fiji (#WAF) would like to advise our valued customers living in the greater Nausori area that the WAF team will be carrying out valve operations from 10am to 4pm and from 9pm to 4am daily, at the Vuci Bypass and Nausori Offtake, to assist with filling and level retention at the Raralevu Reservoir.

The time is subjective to changes based on our reservoirs reaching critical levels due to high water demand during the day.

WAF Chief Operations Officer, Seru Soderberg, said that these works have become extremely necessary to carry out, otherwise the majority of customers receiving their water supply from the Raralevu Reservoir would be without water the following day.

“The customer base within the Suva – Nausori corridor has experienced exponential growth in the past few years and naturally, the demand for water has increased as well. These operations are, thus, essential to ensuring that a level of service is maintained to customers in Nausori,” said Mr Soderberg.

“While the scheduled time for WAF teams to begin this exercise is 9:00 pm every night, the operations could take place at an earlier time, as the exact timing is dependent on water usage and the performance of the system.”

“Customers are therefore kindly advised to collect water when it is available and to have enough in their storage to cater for at least 2 to 3 days worth of use.”

Mr Soderberg added that the frustrations faced by customers are being heard by WAF teams and they are doing their level best to address the situation and have been working on solutions to try and better manage the increase in demand for water.

“The Suva-Nausori water supply system is currently at a point whereby the current production is unable to meet the peak demand during the day time and in an effort to alleviate the issue, WAF, through the assistance of the Fijian Government, Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank, and Green Climate Fund, has commenced with the Rewa River Water Supply Project.”

“Once completed, we can expect that production capacity will increase, leading to an increased volume of water being supplied to the greater Suva area so as to meet the demand from customers. Additionally, our teams are also working tirelessly to resolve and reduce leakages within the system as well.”

“While we do understand the frustrations that our customers are facing, we ask that they extend to us their usual patience, cooperation, and understanding until such time that supplies normalise.”
