The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) urges members of the public to refrain from dumping household waste down toilets, drains and sink as such items lead to dangerous and unhygienic overflows in our sewage system.
Our Wastewater Team and Environmental Officer, based in the West, recently attended to and rectified a complaint regarding the overflow of a chamber along V.M Pillay Road in Lautoka.
Upon investigation, our teams found that the cause of the blockage was items that didn’t belong in our wastewater system such as pieces of rags, sanitary pads, toilet paper rolls and diapers.
The issue was rectified through the use of choke rods and air compressors to clear the blocked chamber.
Reports were then compiled on the effects of the wastewater that was flowing from the drain, eventually, ending up in the sea.
