The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) would like to remind our customers to store water following the volcanic eruption originating from the undersea Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haápai Volcano.
As per weather reports the wide spread ash cloud released from eruption has now covered much of southern and central Lau and will continue to linger of the coming days
The volcanic eruption has released an ash cloud that contains elements of sulphur dioxide, sulphuric acid and other contaminants which will react with rainwater resulting in acid rain. The Acid rain will affect water quality, making it unsafe for consumption.
As such, we urge customers particularly in the Eastern Division, Outer Islands and those who rely on Surface Water Rural and Rain Water Harvesting Schemes to store water for the next 2 – 3 days.
Customers are advised to properly cover reservoirs, tanks and cisterns that contain drinking water to prevent contamination.
For further enquiries, customers can call 3346777 or short code 5777 (all mobile networks) or email contact@waf.com.fj
