Ba residents now have an improved supply of clean treated drinking water after a new water treatment plant in Waiwai was commissioned by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama today (09/09/2022).
The new raw water treatment plant replaces the old Waiwai Water Treatment Plant which was reaching the end of its design life, having been built over 60 years ago.
With an increased treatment capacity of 20 million litres per day compared to the 13 million litres per day of the old treatment plant, the new plant is also able to handle high turbidity levels, guaranteeing safe, potable water supply even during unfavorable weather conditions.
Constructed at a cost of $9.5 million FJD, fully funded by the Fijian Government, it will serve the Ba township and communities, benefitting approximately 46,105 Fijians, multiple manufacturing industries, and businesses in the Ba district and there are provisions for more new connections in the future.
WAF Chairman, Mr Bhavesh Kumar thanked the Fijian Government for their continued support in the water and wastewater sector.”
Over the last 5 years, our Honourable Prime Minister and his Government have been very supportive towards the Water Authority of Fiji in its operations and projects in ensuring that clean water and sanitation is provided to all Fijians in line with the government’s 5 to 20 year National Development Plan,” said Mr Kumar.
The Waiwai Treatment Plant also has a 330KVA backup genset, further adding resilience and reliability to water production and supply scheme for residents.
