The Water Authority of Fiji will be implementing several infrastructural upgrades to resolve the water supply issues in Navua, including a new packaged water treatment plant that will be able to supply 3 million litres per day.
WAF CEO, Dr Amit Chanan, announced the upgrades, while addressing the District Advisory Councilors (DAC) for Serua and Namosi during a meeting at the Ro Matanitobua House in Navua, this morning (04/11/22).
Using the existing irrigation dam in Navua as a raw water source, WAF will be implementing a new water treatment plant to improve water treatment and supply, and cater to the increased demand caused by population growth in the area.
“We are looking to build a 3 million litres per day water treatment plant and a reservoir at a suitable height to ensure pressure all the way right up to the Navua Hospital. Construction is set to begin in the next 6 to 12 months,” said Dr Chanan.
“At the Nayagi Borehole system, WAF operates four pumps – however, at the moment, only three are operational, as the electrical switchboard needs to be replaced.”
“Our teams are currently installing these new switchboards, which will allow us to have all four pumps operating through the power grid, so that we will be able to produce more water out of Nayagi – which is the larger water source for us,” Dr Chanan explained.
Meanwhile, maintenance works will also begin to upgrade the leaking well at the Nayagi borehole facility.
Serua and Namosi District Advisory Council Chairman, Kamal Narayan thanked Dr Chanan and WAF for these efforts.
“For the past few years we have been facing these water crises in Navua, mostly the centre of Navua – now this has brought smiles to the faces of the Navua Communities after the CEO as given the plans to combat the water disruptions as mentioned by CEO that there are major plans to resolve the water issues and I believe the Navua Community is thankful to his effort,” Mr Narayan expressed after the meeting.
The CEO also thanked the Commissioner Central, Mr Josefa Navuku and the Provincial Administrator Serua, Mr Ravindra Narayan for the invitation and opportunity to speak to the Advisory Councilors.
