Fijians in Savusavu have new and improved access to clean treated drinking water after a new water treatment plant in Tavukikau, Savudrodro was commissioned by Prime Minister Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday (14/09/22).
Fully funded by the Fijian Government at a cost of $4.58 million, the new water treatment plant will cater to a population of 10,500 in the township of Savusavu including communities, businesses, Government stations, the Savusavu Hospital, hotels, resorts, the jetty and airport.
WAF COO, Seru Soderberg, thanked the Fijian Government for its continued support to provide safe and clean drinking water, electricity and roads to benefit all Fijians.
“Our goal was to address previous challenges with supply and treatment capacity so we could provide Savusavu residents with a more reliable and resilient water supply,” said Mr Soderberg.
“The new plant provides additional water supply capacity to the current water supply system in Savusavu allowing for the further expansion of the system to accommodate for economic development and growth and, most importantly, world-class treated drinking water.”
The new plant has the capacity to treat 5 million litres of water daily compared to the 1 million litre capacity of the previous plant, as well as the ability to handle high turbidity levels, ensuring bad weather does not impact the supply of safe, potable water.
The new facility also includes a new 1 million litre treated water reservoir which will complement the existing reservoir at the plant, adding to capacity.
Other updated features include automated chemical dosing, which is an upgrade from the tablet and drip feed system, and ensures efficient treatment of raw water at Fiji’s national drinking water standards.
