WAF SITREP #3 – TC SARAI

Re: TC Sarai – WAF Situation Report No #3 as at 1600 Hours, 28 December 2019

This situation report entails the status of the Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) assets around the country in light of Tropical Cyclone Sarai:

  • WAF continues to work around the clock to provide consistent water supply to all Fijians.
  • Repairs to damages caused by TC Sarai will be carried out and water supply will be normalized once the flood waters subside to allow WAF crew members to access the affected areas.
  • The restoration operation will depend on the weather conditions.
  • Members of the public are requested to store and boil all drinking water.
  • WAF continues to inform customers on water disruptions through text messages, WAF website www.waterauthority.com.fj and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WaterAuthorityofFiji/
  • Water carting trucks are on standby to service the affected areas as and when the need arises.
  • The Water Authority of Fiji requests members of the public that require water carting services, to please contact the National Call Centre on 334 6777 or 5777 or on toll-free help line on 1507.

Status of water supply around Fiji are as follows:

CENTRAL / EASTERN DIVISION

Deuba, Navua and Naboro – Normal Operations, Mataivuralevu and Wainikavika intakes are partially blocked. Navua Water Reticulation – Low level of inflow from source to storage reservoirs. Thus restricting the full potential of supply.

Korovou – Normal Operations

Suva to Nausori – The Tamavua water treatment plant (WTP) continues to operate as normal, for now.

However, the Waila water treatment plant continues to operate under reduced capacity due to the Viti Levu wide electricity outage (27/12). Due to the reduction in production, low water levels are being experienced at the service reservoirs in Wainibuku, Tovata, Kalabu, Nasinu, Flagstaff, and Nagatugatu culminating in low water pressure to intermittent water supply to customers in the Suva to Nausori corridor.

Customers have been urged to store and boil sufficient amounts of water. Water carting trucks are on standby.

Levuka – Normal Operations

WESTERN DIVISION 

Rakiraki – Bitutaralagi water treatment plant – Blockages at the water source intake due to immense flooding. Treatment plant is running on standby Genset. Customers living in Naria, Mead Road and Wairuku may face low pressure to intermittent water supply. Five burst mains have been identified, repairs and restoration will depend once flood water recede.

Tavua – Water supply is disrupted to customers as the intake pumps at the Nasivi pump station is clogged due to flood waters. One out of the three raw water pumps is operational. WAF crew members will rectify the issue once flood waters recede.

Vatukoula Water Treatment Plant – Normal Operations

Ba – Balevuto intake dam is closed due to high turbidity. Elevated areas fed from the Waiwai WTP which also includes customers in the elevated areas of Vunisamaloa and Valele.

Lautoka – Normal Operations

Vaturu Dam – Normal Operations, Dam Level is 524.770m amsl (above mean sea level) with a total rainfall of 205mm brought in by TC Sarai.

Nadi – Normal Operations

Sigatoka – Both the Matovo water treatment plant and the Matovo pump station are in normal operation.

Keiyasi System – Raw water pumps were switched off at 1:40pm due to high turbidity in raw water caused by flooding.

NORTHERN DIVISION

Labasa – Water supply is currently disrupted until further notice to customers in Vunivau, Batinikama, Soasoa, Vunika, Basoga and Bulileka due to blockages at the raw-water intake at Nasealevu caused by severe flooding and heavy rain.

Seaqaqa – Normal Operations. Receiving discoloured water. River level has started to rise due to heavy down pour.

Savusavu – High turbidity at the Moliwawa intake.

Taveuni – Water system operating at full capacity for Waiyevo, Bucalevu, Somosomo, Mua and Naselelsele, no major issues in light of the current weather conditions.

Navaca Desalination Plant – Pumping commences as weather has improved thus discoloured of sea water has improved.

MARITIME – OUTER ISLANDS

Rotuma, Vanuabalavu, Moala, Kadavu, and Lakeba – Normal Operations

What is the process and fee for a new water connection?

How much is the Lodgment fee?

  • House under construction / Vacant land / Commercial or Industrial
    • $101.00.
  • Completely built house. – [Please provide a letter from the lands department and/ or completion certificate ]
    • $21.95. [Please provide a letter from the lands department. completion certificate or Stamped Statutory declaration on the completion of the house]

Processing Time

  • Inspection to Approval – 15 Working days from the inspection date.
  • Installation – 30 Working days from payment of New Connection cost, on a first-come, first-serve basis. [Stakeholder processing may cause delays]. *Note: Approval of installation is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

How much does the new connection cost?

  • Type A – $285 [“T” from existing connection] Type B $345 [direct connection from WAF main line]
  • New connection costs for Commercial and Industrial customers will be estimated according to requirements and a cost will be provided.
  • Road Crossing/ Service Enlargement is payable if required for additional meters requested. This will be communicated when the approval of internal and external stakeholders are obtained. WAF on behalf of FRA will refund any unused monies to the customer where applicable.
